Biography
Sculptor and painter Wayan Upadana (b. 1983, Indonesia) draws inspiration from water, melting materials, and the juxtaposition between natural forms and found or ready-made objects. His resin sculptures often emphasise the fluidity and movement of melting and flowing liquid forms. His works include the pigs, one of the icons of the Balinese culture, lounging in bathtubs or ceremonial bowls coated in chocolate, translucent figures in the video-projected sea, and illusionary flat sculptures that can be viewed from all sides.
Born in 1983 in a small village in Gianyar, Bali, Wayan Upadana completed his Fine Art degree in 2008 at Indonesia Institute of Art Yogyakarta and has been a finalist in numerous art awards. Upadana's work explores spirituality, social and cultural issues, especially in relation to contemporary life in society. He has exhibited his artworks in Bali, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and Surabaya in Indonesia and in Melbourne and Fremantle in Australia. He joined the residency programme at the Fremantle Art Centre in 2016 and had his solo exhibition at Orbital Dago Bandung in 2023; "Memory," held at the Fremantle Art Center, Western Australia, in 2016 and "Home" at Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2014. Upadana has also exhibited at various exhibitions, including ART.BALI "Beyond the Myths" at AB.BC, Nusa Dua, Bali in 2018 and Sculpture by the Sea, at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia in 2018.
