New Tropics explores notions of the tropical through the work of contemporary artists of Southeast Asian origin. Spanning a variety of mediums and approaches, their works interrogate what ‘the tropics’ have come to mean or signify, while addressing and subverting its tropes and assumptions. Drawing on the language of tropicality to assert their agency and identity, these artists ask what it means to make work in and about the tropics, and how these may be read within a global discourse.
